Tigers News: Tigers release Opening Day shortstop Alex Gonzalez, Danny Worth up

In Tigers news today, the Detroit Tigers have released Opening Day shortstop Alex Gonzalez today, subsequently purchasing the contract of infielder Danny Worth from the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.

Per ESPN.com and the Associated Press, Gonzalez has struggled to fill the void left by Jose Iglesias's injury and Jhonny Peralta's departure via free agency:

"The Tigers traded for both Gonzalez and Andrew Romine in late March. The 37-year-old Gonzalez started the opener against Kansas City and delivered the winning hit in the ninth inning, but he ended up going just 5 for 30 with Detroit."

With Alex Gonzalez gone, Danny Worth will get another opportunity to prove his mettle with the Tigers. From 2010-13, Worth has appeared in 115 games with the club. He has hit .242 in those appearances with two home runs and 14 RBIs.

No word on where Alex Gonzalez will land next, but it is virtually guaranteed that several MLB teams will give the veteran shortstop a look.
