The Detroit Tigers announced on Friday that slugger Victor Martinez tore the medial meniscus in his left knee last week during his offseason workout program.
"I'm not real happy because we have the potential to lose one of the best hitters in the game," manager Brad Ausmus said, via Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press.
That "potential" is the scariest factor for the franchise during this ordeal, per Fenech:
..that potential will not be fully known until Tuesday, when Martinez is scheduled to undergo surgery with Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.
But the Tigers are holding out hope that the recovery time will not be long-term -- perhaps only a matter of weeks.
Tigers president and GM Dave Dombrowski said that the doctors that read the results of Martinez's Wednesday MRI exam "don't sound overly concerned" about the injury.
"We remain optimistic," Dombrowski added.
