Wings show spirited defense of each other

Detroit — It’s no secret the Red Wings aren’t exactly a big, hard-hitting, intimidating hockey team.

The Red Wings are built more on skill, speed and skating.

It’s long been a held belief that many opponents attempted to take advantage of the Red Wings’ lack of physicality.

If that’s an issue these days, the Red Wings have made sure to stomp out that fact.

Brendan Smith, specifically, went to the aid of Henrik Zetterberg Tuesday against Buffalo and Sabres forward Evander Kane, and Thursday, challenged Arizona’s Kyle Chipchura after what Smith felt was a borderline hit in the corner.
