And that sudden burst, along with some good fortune, proved the difference for Athanasiou and the Red Wings.
Athanasiou scored the lone goal in Tuesday’s victory over Washington thanks mainly to that top-end speed which has been so noticeable in the two NHL games he has played.
“I picked up the puck at our own end and it was the end of my shift, so I was just trying to get it deep,” Athanasiou said.
