Wings lose; still clinch playoff spot

New York – Thanks old friend Jonas Gustavsson.

The former Red Wings goalie, now in Boston, might have gone a long way toward helping the Red Wings back into the playoffs.

BOX SCORE: N.Y. Rangers 3, Red Wings 2

The Red Wings earned a spot in the NHL playoffs for a 25th consecutive season despite a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers Saturday.

The Red Wings will play the Tampa Bay Lightning of a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference’s first-round series (which the Lightning won in seven games).

Pressed into service Saturday in Boston with starting goalie Tuukka Rask ill, Gustavsson and the Bruins lost to Ottawa, the Senators exploding for four second-period goals to win 6-1.
