Wings' Kronwall leads defense, could use less ice time

Deep into the NHL off-season, Helene St. James looks at individual Red Wings and assesses expectations for the new season.

Today's focal point: Defenseman Niklas Kronwall

Looking at 2014-15 production: Nine goals, 35 assists in 80 games; two assists in six playoff games.

Looking at money: Signed through 2018-19 at an annual salary-cap hit of $4.75 million.

Looking back: Kronwall was the Wings' workhorse, his 23:50 minutes-per-game average nearly 3 minutes more than anyone else. He was tops among defensemen in power-play time.

Kronwall is the steadiest and most skilled defenseman on the team, a routine producer even as he plays against the opposing top players.
