Wings’ Glendening looks forward to competition in camp

Detroit — The competition for jobs and playing time among Red Wings forwards is expected to be intense beginning in training camp and the exhibition season.

Luke Glendening realizes that but believes it will be a positive, increasing the performance level of everyone involved.

“It’s an exciting time,” said Glendening, who worked the Red Wings youth clinic Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena. “Since I’ve been here, which hasn’t been long, I don’t know if there’s been as much competition to get into the lineup.”

Signing free agent Brad Richards and knowing Teemu Pulkkinen will start the season with the Red Wings (Pulkkinen is out of minor league options) gives the Red Wings 15 forwards — which includes Pavel Datsyuk (ankle surgery), who likely won’t be ready to start the season, and Johan Franzen (concussion), whose availability is unknown.
