Wings' Coreau stops penalty shot to join shutout club

Los Angeles — It didn’t take long for goaltender Jared Coreau to earn his first NHL shutout.

In only his fifth game, Thursday at Staples Center, Coreau turned aside 34 shots in a 4-0 Red Wings victory.

Coreau stopped 13 second-period shots when the Kings made their biggest push, and stopped forward Tanner Pearson on a first-period penalty shot with the Red Wings clinging to a 1-0 lead, and again showed the ability to be an effective NHL goalie.

“What I like is he battles,” said forward Thomas Vanek of Coreau, who was recalled from Grand Rapids when Jimmy Howard sprained his knee.
