NEW YORK -- The Detroit Red Wings have brought in some defensive insurance for their season finale.
Joakim Andersson was called up Friday for Saturday's matinee at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers. If the Wings win the game in regulation or overtime, they'll clinch third place in the Atlantic Division and a first-round series against the injury-plagued Tampa Bay Lightning.
Good health is crucial to a playoff run, and the Wings have a few people who are "a little banged up," general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press. Justin Abdelkader left Thursday's game at Boston with a lower-body injury, but Holland said he expects Abdelkader to be available for the Rangers game.
