The Detroit Red Wings announced on Thursday they would hold a number retirement ceremony for Red Kelly, the defenseman in Detroit from 1947-1960.

Kelly, 91, was born on July 9, 1927, in Simcoe, Ontario.

Kelly is regarded as one of the greatest players in NHL history. He was a member of eight Stanley Cup championship teams – four with the Red Wings (1950, ’52, ’54 and ’55).
