What went into the Detroit Red Wings' decision to trade Nick Jensen

The potential of prospect Gustav Lindstrom and the promise of a second-round pick sold the Detroit Red Wings on cutting ties with Nick Jensen.

He was traded to the Washington Capitals Friday afternoon along with a 2019 fifth-round pick in exchange for a 2020 second-rounder and defenseman Madison Bowey, a reclamation project.

The Wings had explored re-signing Jensen, 28, but balked at his asking price. At the same time, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan emerged as a front-runner for Jensen.
