The Red Wings slid further out of a playoff picture that was bleak to begin with, following Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators at Little Caesars Arena.
The challenge for coach Jeff Blashill and leaders like Henrik Zetterberg is to make sure the team doesn't lose focus and plays hard over the final 23 games. While management looks to stockpile draft picks, the team still is trying to accumulate points.
"Definitely, we're not going to fold it up," goalie Jimmy Howard said.
That was evident over the final two periods against one of the top teams in the NHL, when the Red Wings outshot Nashville 28-14 and made a game of it following a lousy first period, when the Predators outshot them 15-8 and led 2-0 on goals by Scott Hartnell (4:18) and Kyle Turris (9:35).
