Nelson has some history with the Wings/Griffins organization from his playing days. He played for the Griffins back when they were in the IHL from 1996-1998, then again in 1999-2000, and finally when the Griffins were part of the AHL he played from 2001-2002. Nelson then became the assistant coach of the Griffins for the 2002-2003 season before leaving the organization to become the head coach of the Muskegon Fury of the UHL.
