Tampa Bay 3, Detroit 2: Wings struck by Lightning in Game 1

TAMPA -- The Detroit Red Wings came up short.

A solid road performance Wednesday at Amalie Arena in Game 1 of the best-of-7 series wasn't enough, as the Wings fell 3-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Alex Killorn's goal at 8:52 of the third period.

The Wings started well and even grabbed a lead in the second period, but could not rally once the Lightning retook a one-goal lead.

Mike Green and Justin Abdelkader scored less than two minutes apart in the second period. Jimmy Howard was especially strong in the third period after the Lightning had retaken the lead, making many good saves until he was pulled with 1:40 remaining in regulation.
