TRAVERSE CITY -- Ryan Sproul knows he needs to wind up to show up.
The Detroit Red Wings' defensive prospect began the first day of training camp by signing a new contract, allowing him to join his teammates for a scrimmage. This is an important stretch for Sproul, because he is no longer waiver exempt, and so he needs to cement his case for a job in the NHL. Assets include a 6-foot-3 frame and a wickedly hard right-handed shot. He is known for his offense, and so that's what he needs to deliver when he gets a chance.
