from Peter Baugh of The Athletic,
Darren Helm has done the impossible. He’s made Darren McCarty root for the Avalanche.
“I hope he goes out there and wins a Cup (this season),” McCarty says of his former Red Wings teammate Helm, who’s now playing for Colorado. “I honestly do.”
McCarty, who’s best known in Denver for his fight with Claude Lemieux at the height of the Avalanche-Red Wings rivalry, remembers when Helm first arrived with Detroit, as a 21-year-old in 2007-08. The veteran McCarty had heard talk that Helm could be Detroit’s heir to Kris Draper, a Selke Trophy winner and penalty-kill stalwart.
