Detroit Red Wings great Steve Yzerman is apparently done as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Joe Smith of the local Athletic affiliate tweeted Tuesday afternoon that Yzerman told Lightning players in a meeting he’s stepping aside to be in an advisory role, per an unnamed source.
A source told the Free Press that Yzerman told Lightning players he was going home to Detroit. Yzerman has continued to live in the metro Detroit area during his tenure with the Lightning.
Yzerman, whose long tenure with the Wings earned him the nickname “the Captain,” retired from playing in 2006, after which he joined the Wings’ front office.
