Red Wings' Xavier Ouellet among many touched by Hockey Fights Cancer initiative

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings are encouraging fans who attend tonight's game against the Los Angeles Kings to wear lavender to help support cancer awareness.

It is the team's annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night, an initiative the NHL and NHL Players Association founded in 1998.

It's a cause that is important to many in the organization, including defenseman Xavier Ouellet, whose mother, Marie-Josee, is battling liver cancer.

"Personally, my mom is fighting cancer right now," Ouellet said. "Kind of around it a little bit. It's something that affects a lot of people. I think it's a good thing that we do something like that around the league and this game tonight means a lot to me.
