The Detroit Red Wings are cutting ties with one of their least-used forwards.
Joakim Andersson was placed on waivers today. If he is not claimed by another team by noon Saturday, he will be assigned to the minors. General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press that the move was made for salary cap reasons. "It's a preemptive move for cap flexibility," Holland said. "And we have good depth in Grand Rapids."
Andersson was signed last summer to a one-year deal worth $815,000, indicating that his time with the organization was in question. His asset is his defensive play, but Andersson lacks foot speed and offensive creativity.
