Detroit – The Red Wings signed Filip Zadina whom they selected in the first round, sixth overall, in the 2018 draft, to a three-year entry level contract, they announced Saturday.
Zadina, 18, led all rookies in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) last season with 44 goals, 38 assists and 82 points in 57 games.
He was seventh overall in scoring, in the league.
His selection in the draft came later than the Red Wings and others expected.
The Wings passed on several touted defensemen, a greater need in their NHL lineup than forwards, to pick Zadina.
