The Detroit Red Wings, as they deal with injuries and jockey to make Tuesday's roster deadline, put defenseman Mike Green on short-term injured reserve Monday and assigned two others to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
Green, who is battling a virus that attacked his liver, skated briefly Saturday but won't be ready for Thursday's opener, general manager Ken Holland said of the expected move.
He also said forward Luke Witkowski, who cleared waivers but was not sent out, could start the season with the Red Wings. He remains on the roster.
"We got to figure out what's going on with all of our injured players," Holland said.
