Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios will serve as an assistant coach for the 2018 U.S. Olympic team, USA Hockey announced Friday.
The 2018 Winter Olympics begin in PyeongChang, South Korea, in February.
Chelios was a defenseman for the Red Wings in 1999-2011 and a four-time Olympian. He helped the Wings win two Stanley Cups before retiring and spending five years as an adviser to management for the franchise.
Chelios holds the record for playing the most games by a defenseman in NHL history (1,651). He played 26 seasons in the NHL. He was an assistant coach for the bronze medal-winning 2016 U.
