Red Wings build early lead, hush Coyotes, 5-1

The first period alone featured enough thrills and scares for an entire game.

The Detroit Red Wings lost two forwards but still gained two points Thursday at Joe Louis Arena, decking the Arizona Coyotes 5-1 and running the point streak to nine straight games (6-0-3).

Justin Abdelkader scored for the third time in the last two games, and Niklas Kronwall celebrated his 700th career game with a goal. Gustav Nyquist and Danny DeKeyser also scored. Darren Helm contributed his first goal of the season.

Gaining a big lead early helped as the Wings had a short bench for the majority of the game.
