On the same day the Red Wings announced they signed college free agent defenseman Robbie Russo to a 2 year entry level contract, the team also elected not to sign Ben Marshall to a contract; Marshall is now a free agent.
When the Wings drafted Marshall in 2010 with their 7th round pick(201st overall), they thought he had the potential to become a dynamic offensive defenseman who could quaterback the power play. His great wheels, dynamic offense, puck rushing, first pass, hard shot, and offense first mentality led the Wings to draft him, but there's also good reason why it was in the 7th round and not sooner.
