"We kind of joke around with each other, trying to get each other pumped up," Athanasiou said. "Any time he goes out for a shift I'll say, 'Show me something' and he'll say, 'Do something out there,' so it's a good way to kind of get us going and help the team."
Their game of one-upmanship helped the Detroit Red Wings continue their winning ways Wednesday while solving a nemesis.
Athanasiou scored his second goal of the game 49 seconds into overtime in a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at Little Caesars Arena.
