Red Wings' Andreas Athanasiou extends Griffins' AHL playoffs run

GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids Griffins’ season will live another day.

The Red Wings’ AHL affiliate rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take Game 4 of the Central Division Finals and stay alive in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

After losing the first three games of the series by one goal each, the Griffins beat Lake Erie, 5-4, at Van Andel Arena on Tuesday. Andreas Athanasiou scored the game-winner with 1:55 to play, sniping Monsters goalie Joonas Korpisalo to complete the comeback.

“He’s a gamebreaker,” Griffins coach Todd Nelson said of Athanasiou. “He did it at the right time, that’s for sure.
