ANAHEIM, Calif. — Having exceeded the point of futility, the Detroit Red Wings are trying some new power play looks.
Tuesday’s practice at Honda Center, where the Wings take on the Ducks on Wednesday, saw Steve Ott out with Henrik Zetterberg, Anthony Mantha, Tomas Tatar and Niklas Kronwall, and a five-forward power play unit of Frans Nielsen with Thomas Vanek, Gustav Nyquist, Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou. While the changes boil down to Larkin moving from Zetterberg’s unit to Nielsen’s, and Athanasiou supplanting Brendan Smith, the biggest change is that Riley Sheahan, who has no goals, is off the power play in favor of Ott.
