DETROIT – Gustav Nyquist won't be able to make it to Louisville to watch his namesake run in Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
The Detroit Red Wings forward is in Russia playing for Sweden in the World Championship, which begins today with a game against Latvia.
But that doesn't mean the Kentucky Derby favorite won't be getting some support from a very special NHL guest.
The Stanley Cup will be on hand to support Nyquist in his bid to become the 142nd Derby champion.
Owner Paul Reddam of Windsor, a big Red Wings fan who has named several of his horses after players on his favorite team, has arranged for the Stanley Cup to pay a visit to Nyquist's stall before the race.
