Sports in general tends to be a cyclical business. Teams that are on top today will soon be headed downward.
The 2014-15 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks and the Los Angeles Kings, who won the Cup as recently as 2013-14, both missed the playoffs last season and are on pace to do so again in 2019-20. The reigning Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues missed out on postseason play in 2017-18.
