It’s over. And now it’s official.
Friday, as the Detroit Red Wings assembled for the first day of training camp in Traverse City, Mich., captain Henrik Zetterberg pulled the plug.
While no one seemed capable of, or prepared to utter the word “retirement,” Zetterberg acknowledged that he was done as a player.
“Obviously, it is emotional,” Zetterberg told the gathered media. “It’s been 15 years here. Even though I knew I was on my last couple years, I wish that I could have played a little bit longer.”
It’s fitting that the Wings opted to use this season to reconfigure their marketing strategy, because Zetterberg’s departure certainly puts an exclamation point at the end of the era of Hockeytown.
