The better Nyquist, an unrestricted free agent after this season, plays, the more it will benefit what the Wings are trying to do long-term. The last two seasons have seen pending unrestricted free agents traded at the deadline for future assets – for example, 2017’s Brendan Smith trade included a 2018 second-round pick (Jonatan Berggren) and 2018’s Tomas Tatar trade included a 2018 first-round pick (Joe Veleno), among other assets acquired.
Nyquist, 29, should appeal to a contender because he flirted with the 30-goal mark when he was playing with Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk in the prime of their careers (2013-15).
