Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green announces retirement

Mike Green, whom the Detroit Red Wings traded away during the season, announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday.

Green, who will turn 35 in October, played just two games for the Oilers after being dealt from Detroit in February. He then suffered a knee sprained and did not play again before the season was halted because of COVID-19.

He opted out of playing in the NHL qualifying round because of concerns over the coronavirus. That made the conditional draft pick the Wings got in return for the trade a fourth-round selection for this year.
