The Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals, who eight months ago swapped underperforming first-round picks, can commiserate over losing those players to major surgery.
The Capitals announced Friday former Wings forward Mantha underwent shoulder surgery and is out indefinitely. Mantha had two goals and four assists in 10 games. (One of the assists came Oct. 27 when the Wings rallied from a two-goal deficit to win in overtime at Washington.)
Jakub Vrana showed up late to Wings training camp, and then lasted 10 minutes in his first practice before leaving with a shoulder injury coach Jeff Blashill said had nagged Vrana since last season.
