Detroit Red Wings start strong, but can't hold on, in loss to Flames

The Detroit Red Wings came out with another good start.

It still wasn’t enough to overcome one of the best teams in the NHL, as the Wings fell 5-3 Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena to the Pacific Division leading Calgary Flames.

The Wings are winless in their last six games and have won just once in their last 11 games. Unlike their previous effort, on New Year’s Eve, at least this game they didn’t stop trying. But the talent discrepancy showed, as the Flames used their top line to rally.

Darren Helm and Jacob de la Rose made it 2-0 in the first period and Andreas Athanasiou beat Mike Smith glove-side on a penalty shot in the second period.
