The Detroit Red Wings made a move Sunday when they added talented Notre Dame defenseman Robbie Russo. Russo could not come to terms with the New York Islanders, who drafted the Westmont, IL native in the 4th round of the 2011 NHL Draft.

The move strengthens the pipeline of defensemen in the Red Wings system, but for a player who wasn’t going to play in the NHL for the Islanders due to a young core of d-men, it’s curious that he jumps to a Red Wings team with a conga line forming for playing time on the blue line.
