The Detroit Red Wings selected big center Michael Rasmussen from Tri City (WHL) with the ninth overall pick in Friday's entry draft at the United Center in Chicago.
Rasmussen (6-6, 221) had 32 goals and 55 points in 50 games for Tri City last season.
The Red Wings need to boost organizational depth at two positions, center and defense.
This is the Red Wings' highest selection since 1990, when they took center Keith Primeau with the third overall pick.
The Red Wings are done drafting until Saturday, unless they trade up for another first-round pick tonight.
