Detroit Red Wings say farewell to Joe Louis Arena, close a chapter

They screamed and raised countless cups of beer and held up thousands of cell phones, trying to record this moment, as the final seconds ticked down in Joe Louis Arena — three, two, one.

And it was over.

An octopus came flying onto the ice and a red light swirled over the crowd, as the Detroit Red Wings skated around the Joe, one last time. The players raised up their sticks, applauding the fans, as “Auld Lang Syne” blared over the loudspeakers.

Farewell, Joe.

“I don’t think I’ve never had goosebumps this many times in a game,” captain Henrik Zetterberg said, after the Wings played their final game in this old arena along the riverfront, a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils that turned into a wild, deafening, rollicking, sing-along.
