The young guys led the way as the Detroit Red Wings narrowed the chase against another opponent, only to fall short in the end.
They trailed the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday at Little Caesars Arena just over a minute after the puck dropped and the damage grew as the Blackhawks scored on four of their first eight shots. The Wings punched back in the third period, grabbing momentum thanks to their young 20-somethings and forcing the game into overtime.
Patrick Kane scored nearly three minutes into overtime to hand the Wings a 5-4 loss.
Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou each scored twice as the Wings fought back from a 4-1 deficit.
