After placing defenceman Jakub Kindl on waivers thirteen days ago, the Detroit Red Wings placed veteran fourth-liner, Joakim Andersson, on waivers early Friday morning. Andersson will have until noon on Saturday to clear waivers, if he is not picked up by another team he will be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
According to Detroit general manger, Ken Holland, the decision to place Andersson on waivers was purely for salary cap reasons:
“It’s a preemptive move for cap flexibility,” Holland said. “And we have good depth in Grand Rapids.”
Along with Landon Ferraro, who was picked up by the Boston Bruins earlier this season, Andersson becomes the second fourth-liner that the Red Wings have placed on waivers this season.
