The Detroit Red Wings signed defender Olli Määttä to a one-year, $2.25 million contract going into last season. He settled right in with the Red Wings and did a great job finding his way as a valuable part of the team’s defensive core.
It did not take long for the Detroit Red Wings to realize that they had something in Määttä and that he was settling into his new home quite well. They ended up giving him a contract extension in the middle of the season.
His level of play backed it up, and Red Wings General Manager (GM) Steve Yzerman decided to reward the Finnish defender.
