Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green is opting out of playing in the NHL's restart, set for August 1.
Green, 34, was traded to the Edmonton Oilers — who are led by Hall of Fame general manager Ken Holland, the former longtime Wings executive — for a conditional draft pick February 24, and played two games for them before injuring his right knee.
The Red Wings will officially acquire a fourth-rounder in the 2020 draft in compensation in GM Steve Yzerman's first trade deadline deal in Detroit. They would've received a third-round pick in 2021 if the Oilers reached the West finals and Green played in half of their games.
