Mike Babcock left the Detroit Red Wings in 2015 partly because he wanted to be the guy who delivered the Toronto Maple Leafs from five decades of futility.
The Wings – under previous general manager Ken Holland and with the backing of owner Mike Ilitch – offered Babcock several million dollars to keep coaching beyond the 10 years he already had logged with the Wings.
