By next weekend, the Detroit Red Wings could be a couple of players healthier.
Defenseman Brendan Smith (knee) should be ready for the New York Islanders game next Friday, general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press today. The Wings next play Tuesday, when they host the New Jersey Devils (7:30 p.m., FSD) in the first game after the All-Star break.
Holland said there is optimism that forward Dylan Larkin (head) will be back soon. Larkin has not played since complaining about not feeling well after Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard (knee) is expected to need about a week’s worth of practices and/or taking shots.
