Sam Gagner fits what general manager Steve Yzerman is trying to accomplish with the Detroit Red Wings.
Gagner is a skilled veteran; a former first-round pick who does things right. He brings a right-shot dimension to the offense and the mentality of a mentor to the young players. It’s why the relationship has been extended for a second time, with the Wings re-signing Gagner for one year.
Yzerman has spoken over the past few days of wanting to surround the younger core of the rebuild with veterans. Over the weekend, defenseman Marc Staal was signed to a one-year extension.
