VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- A busy trade front has restocked the Detroit Red Wings' farm system, even as veterans steadfastly eye what would be a monumental run toward the playoffs.
After trading forwards Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott a day apart, the Wings on Wednesday called up Mitch Callahan to have 12 forwards available for Friday night's game at Calgary. That's the last game of Gustav Nyquist’s suspension, so he will be available Saturday at Edmonton.
The Wings are at six defensemen after trading Brendan Smith to the Rangers, but they don’t want to call up anyone yet because they only have four regular call-ups left for the rest of the season.
