Detroit Red Wings add size, defense on Day 2 of NHL Draft

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Detroit Red Wings got smoother, bigger, and meaner during the weekend’s NHL draft.

A day after picking up puck-moving defenseman Dennis Cholowski at 20th overall, the Wings used the second round of the draft to add size and more defense.

At 46h overall, they selected forward Givani Smith, a beaming hulk of an 18-year-old who prides himself on being immovable. Smith, 6 feet 1 and 196 pounds, racked up 146 penalty minutes last season with the OHL’s Guelph Storm, along with 23 goals and 19 assists.
