The Detroit Red Wings have added Doug Houda to their revamped coaching staff.
Houda, 49, is a former NHL defenseman who played for the Wings in the late 1980s and briefly in the 1990s and who brings NHL coaching experience from having spent more than 10 years with the Boston Bruins. Houda is expected to concentrate on the Wings' defensemen and penalty killers, a job last held by Tony Granato.
The move reflects a shift behind the bench one season into the tenure of head coach Jeff Blashill. Granato left after the playoffs to take over at Wisconsin, and on Monday, the Wings announced they had removed Pat Ferschweiler as the other bench assistant.
