DENVER – Brad Richards, who has played more NHL outdoor games than any player in history, scored with a minute left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie as the Detroit Red Wings went on to beat the Colorado Avalanche, 5-3, in front of a sellout crowd of 50,095 at Coors Field tonight.
Richards played in his fifth outdoor game. He skated in three outdoor games with the Rangers (2012 and two in 2014) and one with the Blackhawks (2015).
Darren Helm (goal, assist) scored into an empty net with 19.3 seconds left.
Justin Abdelkader scored on a centering pass from Helm to give the Wings a 3-2 lead with 6:32 left in the third period.
