Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died Sunday night after he fell at a home in Novi, the result of what appears to be an accident related to fireworks.
Novi Police Lt. Jason Meier said paramedics were sent to a home at 10:13 p.m. and upon arrival, found Kivlenieks unresponsive. He was transported to Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi where he was pronounced dead, Meier said.
"There appears to have been some type of a fireworks malfunction," he said. Kivlenieks fled a hot tub, slipped, fell and struck his head, according to an initial investigation.
"We're treating it initially as a slip-and-fall injury," he said.
