Van Gundy to begin discussions with Drummond on extension

Van Gundy said he would begin discussions with center Andre Drummond and his agent on a contract extension.

The Pistons can save themselves $13 million in cap space by holding off on Drummond’s extension until next offseason. It’s possible Van Gundy can convince Drummond to hold off on an extension until then with a sales pitch to bring in more talent around him– but it’s more likely this deal gets done this offseason and soon.

The idea of being able to build a better team should be enticing to Drummond–though not as enticing as it is for Van Gundy and management–but is the prospect of adding hypothetical talent worth risking an injury and losing out on the millions and millions of dollars he’s guaranteed to make if he signs an extension now?
